History of the Cacao Ceremony
For millennia, the Cacao ceremony ritual was performed by many Indigenous peoples - the Maya, the Aztec, and other cultures of Mesoamerica. Genetic evidence places the use of cacao in the Amazon over 5,000 years ago. According to the First Peoples beliefs, Cacao’s origins were part of the Creation myth of humans and other important plant foods such as maize. For these cultures, it was not only a very important food but ritually connected the users to the gods.
It was drunk at significant community events, weddings, initiation ceremonies; it was used for healing humans as well as sacrificial rituals and at death rituals, accompanying the dead on their journey into the underworld. It became a liquid offering for the gods due to its association with human blood.
